This dynamic week-long workshop features music of the great jazz masters taught by the world-class faculty of the Jazz Department at the Mason Gross School of the Arts.

Program Requirements


As part of the camp application process, all High School applicants are asked to submit a brief recorded audition for this year’s camp. Middle school students may optionally submit a recorded audition with their application if they wish to.

  • A video audition must to contain an example of ensemble performance, such as playing along with a practice track:
  • Only one (1) recorded selection is needed on your video. The following should be performed using a practice track, as mentioned above:
    • Piano and Guitar should play the melody one time, followed by one or two choruses of an improvised solo, and finally an additional chorus of playing the chords only, as would be done within a rhythm section when someone else would be taking a solo.
    • Wind instrument players should play the melody one time, followed by one or two choruses of an improvised solo.
    • Drummers should play along with the practice track to demonstrate timekeeping and providing fills. Students may also demonstrate taking a solo on an additional chorus of the tune selection.

Description


Dig deep into the music of jazz masters in sessions taught by faculty in the nationally recognized Mason Gross jazz program!  Sample a week in the life of a Mason Gross jazz major while improving improvisation, small group, and large ensemble skills.

This summer’s program celebrates the 100th birthday of the legendary Charles Mingus. Participants will study Mingus charts and enjoy masterclasses taught by guest artists from the NYC Mingus Big Band. Students will also spend the week preparing for their final end-of-week concert showcase for family and friends to enjoy!
