The Rutgers Summer Dance Conservatory is an intensive, pre-college program for intermediate to advanced dancers who seek to build artistic acuity and technical endurance while learning about options for college study and careers in dance.

Program Requirements

Video Auditions 


  • Video Requirement: Your video must be less than 15 minutes in length.
    • Begin your video by stating your name, age, and date of birth.
    • Ballet - Center
      • Adagio to include a pirouette exercise – 4 sets of 8 counts performed on each side
      • Petit Allegro – 2 sets of 8 counts performed on each side
    • Contemporary – Improvisation
      • 90 second improvisation exploring the qualities of smooth and sharp
      • 90 second improvisation exploring the concepts of enclosing and expanding
      • 90 second improvisation exploration prompt: How does dance make you feel?
    • Hip Hop – Movement Combination
      • Movement combination must not exceed 5 minutes and may be original or from standard repertory. It should demonstrate the dancer’s expressive qualities and flow in the form of Hip Hop.
Enrollment Criteria:
Students who meet particular program criteria can apply to this program but must be approved/accepted to participate.

Dancers interested in a collegiate-level atmosphere experience a rigorous daily schedule of diverse movement practices within African Diasporic forms, Classical/Traditional forms, Contemporary Fusion forms and Somatic forms. The expansive training in a variety of movement practices aims to develop and broaden skills that are reflective of the ever-changing field of Dance. Daily improvisation and choreography classes engage in the practice of movement exploration and dance-making culminating in student choreography to perform in a fully produced, end-of-session showcase. Classes are taught by Rutgers dance faculty in the Mason Gross dance studios. Students experience Master Class Series with renowned teaching artists. Dual session students participate in restorative wellness workshops and attend a special weekend event.

  • Single session: $1,225 residential; $775 commuter
  • Dual session: $2,750 residential; $1,800 commuter
